It’s true! With few exceptions every former commercial director screws up at least their first feature by cutting them like they’re a two-hour spot. Bay’s Armageddon is almost impossible to watch. In an interview given around the time of its release, Bay announced, “Not one shot is on the screen more than 2 and a half seconds.”
Not to put myself on his level, but as a former spot director my first several corporate-sponsored documentaries had so many gratuitous cuts I can’t stand to watch them.

February 2, 2008 at 5:29 pmI recently crossed the bridge to Mac and FCP, and left the PC’s and Ppro alone for a while because of the constant instability of the latter. Several different machines, Ppro from 5.1 to the latest CS2, from old Pinnacle to recent Matrox hardware, as well as software alone (that prooved on my side to be the most stable configuration. I’ve experienced so many crashes and destroyed projects that I could not figure how to go on that way. Large projects, especially if worked on for a long time, were not reliable enough, and it used to get worse when using multiple or nested sequences. Yet, it is a pity to waste years of espertise and start from scratch on a new editing SW (besides, there are some features on FCP I can’t get used to, like the clip not showing in the browser if it has or not already been used in the project, or the lack of a “scene detect” in dv while capturing). If Ppro was much more stable on a Mac, I’d go for that, but reading through the forums, it seems it is even worse than on PC.

I do know that Adobe takes the memory issue very seriously. I’m also reasonably sure that it will be solved some day. Maybe sooner than later.

I really love the Premiere workflow, and if it only were more solid, I’d never thought of moving to a different editing SW, with all the money and time waste it brings.
