  • How remove sliver of pillarboxing?

Posted by Peyton Todd on April 25, 2015 at 3:06 pm

In an earlier post I was faced with a sliver of letterboxing, which John Rofrano solved by pointing out that I should set my properties to match the 720 x 480 source, but since I was using square pixels instead of .9091, I should multiply the 720 width by .9091 to get 655 for the 4×3 output I desired.

Unfortunately, this time I have a pillarboxed result, and I have been unable to find settings that remove this problem. When I set the properties to match those of the source – which are the same as before:”24.4 Mbps, 720 x 480 (4:3) at 29.970 fps DV (Sony) (NTSC) (DVCPRO)” (per MediaInfo), this doesn’t change the preview window, nor the output either, across several different parameters I (more or less randomly) chose.

If this tells you anything: When I experimented with different widths in the properties window, I was able to change the sliver of pillarboxing to a sliver of letterboxing by choosing a width of 692, but with the width set at 693 I’m back to pillarboxing (in the preview window).

Incidentally, it seems odd that I get the opposite problem with this source than with the one in my earlier post since it was shot with the same ancient Sony portable video camera long ago (ca. 1970), when only 4×3 ratio black and white video was available. All this set of videos was converted to AVI in 2002. And all worked fine in earlier versions of Vegas.

I should mention that I have no particular reason for choosing either square or .9091 pixels. The built-in NTSC DV (720×480, 29.970 fps) choice in Vegas come with .9091, which is fine with me as long as I get rid of the pillarboxing/letterboxing problem.

    Thanks for your help.

What happens if you Open Event Pan/Crop, then right mouse on it and select Match Output Aspect?

I’m not following what’s different this time. If you start new project and use the match media settings to match the project to the media do you still see letter boxing? (you should not). Is it because you have different kinds of media and some match but others don’t? If you are working with DV you should be able to just use the standard DV setting in Vegas Pro and everything should match. Why is this DVCPRO media different?

Try using Pan/Crop as John Bolton suggested but you shouldn’t have to do this if your project is set correctly and your media really is DV.

Thanks, going to pan/crop and choosing Match Source Aspect worked perfectly!

I do get good results with the same AVI file if I simply open it in a brand new VEG project. That solution is far from ideal, though, since I have a lot of editing work invested in the current VEG file, which was always working in earlier versions of VEGAS.

Fortunately, John Bolton’s solution worked perfectly in the current Vegas file, even though simply choosing the correct parameters from the list box offered by Vegas in the Properties dialog did not. I wish I could tell you why.The choice offered in the Properties dialog said “NTSC DV (720×480, 29.970 fps)”, and picking it sets the pixel size to .9091, which is exactly what MediaInfo tells me (although MediaInfo does not mention pixel size). Strangely, choosing Match Source Aspect does not change what appears in the Properties dialog. As long as I have chosen Match Source Aspect beforehand, I get perfect 4×3 results even with properties set to HDV 1080-60i (1440×1080, 29.970 fps).

With my problem solved, I can now proceed with my work. But in case you – as a video guru – have an interest in trying to get to the bottom of the problem, let me know, and I’ll place the AVI and VEG files on Dropbox for you to have a look at.

    Thanks again for your help.

I’d be happy to take a look at it if you’d like. I also curious as to what might be going on.

Okay, here’s the link to the two files, VEG and AVI. Enjoy!

Are the files still there or did you remove them? I am also curious but Dropbox seems empty?
