I have an hp xw8000 with 1 GB and would like to upgrade considerably but have been getting conflicting reports as to what is good for my system and bad for my system.

My main applications are AE 6.5 and Avid Xpress Pro w/Mojo. The xw8000 can hold up to 12 GB but I was thinking of purchasing 2-3 more only for a total of 3-4. Am I looking for trouble with that much or is 3-4 GB right what the doctor ordered for AE?

So, if there is anyone on here that uses those two applications a lot on an xw8000 I’d love to hear what you use. If you don’t fit into that catagory I still would like to hear your thoughts on RAM amounts.

    Thanks

its just an application can’t take advantage of more than 2 gigs and windows can’t take advantage of like more than 4 is it? Not sure but the point is you can have *too much* ram meaning its basically just sitting in your machine doing nothing and it was a waste of money because it can’t be taken advantage of. So find out hte max amount windows can take advantage of and there ya go

I used After Effects with 4 gigs of RAM and 2 gigs of RAM, I didnt’ see much different. But you can preview more with the 4 gigs, and you won’t have to purge that often.

If you have more than 2GBs of RAM – you need to be aware of the AE issues involved. You need to also look into the ‘3GB Switch’ and implement that so that your programs can take advantage of the extra RAM (other wise their stuck with 2)

You also have to set your AE working prefs differently. I wrote up a few things here:

    Hope that helps,
