how many fonts in an AE project?
Posted by Rich Ramazinski on October 13, 2008 at 6:33 pmhey guys-
Just wondering if anyone knows a way to look at a proj file and see ALL the fonts needed to run it? I’m delivering a collected comp to a client and want to make sure all fonts go with in the package.
thanks,
r

October 13, 2008 at 6:56 pmDone this before, quick and easy. Close AE. If you’re on a Mac go to User>Library and move the Fonts Folder to your desktop. Go to Hard Drive>Library and move that Fonts folder to an new folder on your desktop. Open the AE project and it will tell you all the fonts that are missing. You can also do the same thing for plugins. Put the Fonts folders back where you got them. If you’re on a PC you’ll have to ask someone else where the Font folder is 🙂 same rules apply though.

October 13, 2008 at 9:12 pmGo to File>Collect Files
Check “Generate Report Only”
Click “Save” and choose a location.Open the text file.
Near the bottom, you should see some text that says:
“Layer: Text Layer
External dependencies: ”
Below it should list all fonts used in the project. If there is an easier way, I don’t know it.
InDesign collects fonts whenever you package a project (similar to AE’s Collect Files), but I have not found a way to do the same in AE.If someone knows how, share, please.

December 2, 2008 at 8:59 amStill watch out for Mac/Pc swapping.
Fonts can have different names on the different systems and make them “missing”.From the cs3 help:
”
In addition to the fonts installed on your system, After Effects uses font files in this local folder:Windows Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts
Mac OS X Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts
”Once a font is missing we seemed to be in the dark though: From Creative Cow forum:
Q. “Is there a command or function to replace a font globally in a project?”
A. “I don’t think this is supported yet. I can’t find any answers either.”I did not find any solution, nor with setting a preference on substitution font, nor with replacing all instsnces of a font. I now have to browse through all layers and comps to see if there is a font that needs replaced… Or do I?
