  • How long should 9mins take to compress to mpeg2?

I create Reels in FCP5 using uncompressed 10-bit blackmagic files. How long should a file take to compress to mpeg2 in compressor? Because when I send it to compressor at 2 pass VRB 6.5Mbps Average bit rate takes 50mins or more. If I somehow get it a Ref file or uncompressed version of it out of FCP5 and into DVDSP4, seems to take about the same time, maybe alittle less. I have tried to make Ref files of my movie first and that alone takes 20mins.

This is a new machine, the companies old G5 has FCP3 and that quicktime plugin of mpeg2 which runs fast, but tiger and FCP5 doens’t allow it.

Our primary (and newest) video editing system has the following specs:
    FCP5 Studio
    Motion 2
    QT 7.04
    DVDSP 4.3
    Tiger 10.4.4
    Dual G5 2GHz (Dual Core)
    2.5GB DDR2 SDRAM RAM
    6600LE PCI Express 128MB
    Multiple Firewire 800 drives connected.
    Additional 400GB internal SATA Drive.
Note: External firewire drives are used for storage only. All files being worked on are located on internal SATA drives, either from the boot disk or the additional internal SATA drive.

It should not take that long! I compressed a 25 minute piece in under 30 minutes yesterday. I’m using an older dual 2ghz g5, so yours should smoke through the 9 minute file.

The 2-pass VBR setting is your problem. It just does not work consistantly in Compressor 2. Change your setting to single pass. With only 9 minutes of video, you could max out the encoding at 7.0+ and still have enough room on your DVD.

You could export your QT file out of FCP first, then import that file into compressor and set up your settings….oops just noticed you have tried that…. I have found this to be the most reliable, as exporting directly from FCP does not always save time. It used to work all the time, but now something in Compressor 2 is broken.

The other issue you might have is with QT 7.0.4. Jump over to the Apple discussion QT forum and read up on the problems. Apple has some fixes that might help, but it will probably be a little bit longer before we get a software update that addresses the real problem.
