How long do LCD monitors last? I ask because I’d like to get a legit broadcast monitor for my home suite where I’ll be learning DaVinci Resolve and doing some freelance work.

I’m interested in getting the JVC DT-R24L41DU because it’s the most affordable 10-bit monitor with SDI connections, however, the FSi BM230 isn’t that much more expensive and I’ve heard this brand of monitors is phenomenal. So if LCD monitors last quite a long time, I think the FSi is worth it (even though it’s 8-bit).

    Thoughts?

How long is a loaded question. How long does anything last? I have a panasonic LCD that is probably 6 or 7 years old and still looks great.

If you take care if it, turn it off at the end of the day, don’t leave still images sitting on it for hours at a time, and try to avoid dropping it on the floor it will last for many years. On a cost per year basis, you would be looking at less than 300 or 400 a year. If you are running a business, the 3000 dollar Flanders, running for 5 or so years isn’t a bad deal. Take care of it, use it for a secondary monitor after that, (cause the 100 inch 8K model has just come out) and the price just keeps dropping.

It certainly won’t die after a year…unless you drop it.

Most range from 30,000 hours to 60,000 hours. It depends largely on the backlight. In reality the technology will evolve to a point where you won’t want to use it as your primary display well before just about any modern LCD monitor will actually ‘die.’ Probably better to ask how long any particular display will meet your needs rather than how long it will technically last, because it will almost certainly outlast your needs.

Oh, and the JVC model you reference is an 8 bit panel, 10 bit processing. If we are going to call that 10 bit then the BM230 is 12 bit, because it has 12 bit processing and an 8 bit panel.
