How is this workflow?
Posted by James Bishop on December 14, 2010 at 4:41 pmHey,
I’ve recently started doing wedding videos and was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to whether the following workflow is OK…
A-Cam is a Z1, shooting 50i, capturing into FCP as ProRes422
B-Cam is a DSLR (T2i), shooting in 30fps, converting to ProRes422 in compressor, before bringing into FCP.I then apply a deinterlace filter to all Z1 footage.
I export as Quicktime Movie, and convert to DVD Best Quality 90mins in Compressor, before importing in to Studio Pro.
Thanks! James

December 14, 2010 at 5:10 pmIs there a reason why you are shooting two different frame rates – 30fps (btw, is it progressive or interlaced) and 50i? Make it easy on yourself and shoot the same frame rate and resolution with both cameras.
If you were referring to the De-interlace filter in FCP, NEVER use that. It just tosses out one of the fields.
Your FCP > Compressor > DVDSP idea is correct though.
But like I said, shoot the same frame rate and resolution on both cameras.

December 14, 2010 at 9:23 pmCheers for the advice Rob. Unfortunately I don’t think a Z1 & a t2i can shoot in the same frame rate? Am I wrong about that? The t2i shoots progressive… The Z1 is interlaced

They can…29.97fps. OH, but you have the PAL version of the camera. Didn’t get the PAL version of the T2i? So you are mixing STANDARDS….NTSC and PAL
[James Bishop] “Am I wrong about that? “
Yes. Both the T2i and the Z1, in NTSC land…shoot 29.97fps. the 550D…the European version of the T2i…should should 25p. Does it not?
[James Bishop] “The t2i shoots progressive… The Z1 is interlaced”
That has zero bearing on frame rate. It’s the difference between full frames, and video with two interlaced fields per frame. Both can run at the same FPS

December 15, 2010 at 11:49 amThanks Shane. As you can tell I am a little clueless when it comes the technical side of things.
My t2i was bought from Hong Kong and i dont know if it is PAL or NTSC, but it doesn’t shoot 25fps. It shoots 24fps, 60fps & 30fps.
My Z1e (which is secondhand and was originally bought new in the US), only shoots 50i & 60i.
What do you think would be the best set-up for both cameras? Is my current workflow the best I can do?

December 15, 2010 at 12:54 pmFrom the Canon UK site, the Canon 550D which is what its called in EU/UK can shoot
1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25, 23.976 fps)
1280 x 720 (59.94, 50 fps)
640 x 480 (59.94, 50 fps)And from the DP review site, the Canon T2i which is what its called in the US can shoot
1080p @ 30, 25 or 24 fpsLink
https://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos550d/Even the Canon Hongkong site says the T2i can shoot
Full HD: 1920 x 1080; 30p/25p/24pSo how come your camera can’t shoot 25?

December 15, 2010 at 5:15 pmI’ve just realised that I have been a bit of an idiot and did not realise that I had to switch the camera from NTSC to PAL in order for the 25fps setting to appear.
So would I be best off shooting the T2i in 25fps with the Z1 in 50i?
Or would I better off shooting the T2i in 50fps (1280×720) and the Z1 in standard definition (DVCAM) at 50i? Would this be a better option for videos that I don’t need to be full HD?
Cheers
James
