How important is the graphics card when it comes to video rendering?
Posted by Hunter Smith on January 20, 2013 at 10:22 amI’m looking at a sony vaio laptop with:
i7 processor
8gb ram
Nvidia gt 640I know the processor is great and there’s enough ram, but the card is definitely weaker. However its the only card that Sony offers on this laptop. How important is the graphics card when it comes to rendering videos? I only use raw footage, I don’t use any effects or anything like that. Thanks

In which way? Speed? Acuity? Access to all templates? It being used while you get on with other jobs? Will GPU Render ACCel work for ALL templates?

January 20, 2013 at 1:23 pmThe GPU will only make rendering faster so “how important is the GPU?” is determined by “how important is your time?” since that’s all it will buy you. The GT series is not as powerful as the GTX series so I doubt that the GT 640M GPU in that laptop will have any positive affect at all unless it’s a really slow i7 CPU. If the card doesn’t have at least 512MB of memory, Vegas won’t see it at.

January 20, 2013 at 3:58 pmOkay thanks. The i7 is a quad core and the card has 1gb memory. This should be fine for the basic editing I described right? I just want to be able to edit without any major slow down and render projects without running out of memory or anything, cause on my old computer sometimes I would render a project and it would fail

Yea, but the i7 Quad Core comes in speeds as slow as the 1.06 GHz i7-620UM or as fast as the 3.8 GHz i7-3840QM so saying it’s an “i7 quad core” unfortunately doesn’t say much about it’s performance. Sony recommend at least 2.0 GHz multi-core CPU although that is bare minimum.
The 1GB of memory on the graphics card is great. Vegas Pro should see this and use it.

January 20, 2013 at 5:56 pmAh true. I’m looking at the laptop on Sonys website and it’s kinda confusing cause it says the i7 is “2.20ghz/3.20ghz”, so im not sure how it could be both lol. I suppose regardless it would be an good step up over my single core processor I have on my computer

Intel is using a technology they call “Turbo Boost” so those number mean that it normally runs at 2.20 GHz across all 4 cores but it can shutdown to one or more cores until it runs at 3.20 Ghz on a single core. It’s a kind of temporary overclocking to boost speed when needed. You can safely think of it as a 2.20 GHz i7 which is not that bad.

January 20, 2013 at 6:42 pmOkay thanks, so in your opinion would this be a fine laptop to get for the level of editing Im doing? Or should i look for a more expensive one. I’m just stringing together raw footage, and I’m using Vegas pro 10 at the moment although I could upgrade Vegas if I needed to

January 21, 2013 at 6:15 pmIt’s probably a fine laptop for what you want to do. It’s fairly powerful and should work nicely.

January 21, 2013 at 7:54 pmCheck specs very carefully.
We generally think i7 = 4 cores.
Laptops often quote i5 or i7 processers but reading specs often show just 1 or 2 cores not the expected 4. Just been through the sony shop looking at laptops with i7 processers. All have just 2.Toshiba i5 had just 1
