  • How does one remember the keyboard shortcuts for all the 3 NLEs ?

Posted by Shravan Ram on July 25, 2014 at 9:32 am

This might be a pretty silly question..

but they say,an ideal editor in today’s world is one who is equally proficient with Avid ,PPro as well as FCP.

but each of these have different keyboard shortcuts ( many functions may have similar keys ) but still..

How does one tune their mind continuously and adapt each time a project requires you to use a different NLE ?

Like everything else, this also comes with practice I assume ?

Or would it be useful to write down all the essential shortcuts for each of the NLEs on a paper and perhaps stick it onto the wall near your workstation – so you constantly keep looking at it and over a period of time you get acquainted with them ?

Any tips will be appreciated guys ,I’m just a beginner starting out in the field of post-production and I’m in the process of deciding which NLE I like to use the most ( as of now it’s PPRo ,but I’d like to reach a similar level of proficiency with Avid, don’t really care much about FCP )

    https://www.kbcovers.com

Get keyboard covers (skins) for all the programs you use. Eventually you will learn them.

I am not employed by kb covers, I just own them and they are nicely made,

I believe Logic keyboard also makes them for all the major NLEs .

I use the FCP 7 keyboard shortcuts for all my NLEs. Makes it much easier.

I just customize all my shortcuts in each program so that the ones I use the most remain the same.

I curse at the keyboard alot and then check the ever-distancing DOB on my drivers license. Then I curse my age.

You must really be getting up there if you have to check you drivers license to remember your age 😉

I stick to editing in Premiere Pro – haven’t found a job it can’t handle yet and every place I’ve freelanced at around LA is using CC now so I haven’t run into that problem ;P

Sorry… that’s not a good answer. I agree with JP though, customize it so they’re similar. Anybody who isn’t customizing their keyboard is probably wasting a little time with a lot of operations, it adds up.

I used a custom layout in FCP7 and I basically have the same layout in PPro. I use a different layout for Avid because Avid just works differently. Sometimes I’ll take a screen shot of the keyboard layout and print that off for reference if I’ve been away from a particular NLE for a long time.

Agree with Andrew here. I think FCP classic and Premiere Pro have a great deal of similarity in approach, so you can probably customize your keyboard to be close to the same, however if you try to do that for Avid, you will not be able to get the most of out of it. It will eventually lead to a lot of frustration. I am long time Avid user and also used FCP a great deal from version 1-7. I edit completely differently on Avid and FCP. You can edit like FCP in Avid, but it’s really like having one hand tied behind your back, and works against Avid’s strengths.
