  • How does one export Alpha Channel using Compressor

Posted by Corey Ogilvie on December 20, 2007 at 5:12 am

The problem. I apply Chroma Key to greenscreen HD 1080p footage, ensure sequence settings are million colors+, export with compressor ensuring video export settings are at million colors+, and I still can’t get an exported video clip with alpha channel. The BG is all black. Any ideas??? Would be a big help!

Which Codec are you using? As far as I am aware, the only high quality codec that supports alphas (millions of colours+) is the Animation codec.

This will work, but if you have a lot of footage, will be very render intensive. There may be another codec that will support alphas.

    Cheers,

I would do this in After Effects. But, not knowing what keyer you are using, not sure what kind of control you have over your mattes. There may be a preserve alpha switch somewhere.

You can check your alpha channel in the canvas I believe. Not sure why you are choosing Compressor for your export, FCP can do this all on it’s own.

    Have a wonderful day.

Also DO NOT render your timeline. Make sure it is unrendered before exporting it, use animation millions+ using Export via Quicktime Conversion and it should work for you.

    Thanks for the response guys.

I’ve tried all the suggestions, and still, no alpha. The reason for wanting to use compressor is its ideal for multi-sequence, multi-codec large batch exports on large projects (which thankfully isn’t the case here). I’m using Chroma Key filter in Final Cut, and do not have or use After Effects. It does work when I export using “Quicktime Conversion” with identical settings, so I’m led to believe this may be a bug with compressor. Oh well, thanks anyway.

if you want to render the timeline before exporting it, choose Animation as the codec of the sequence format

Is there already anyone who knows how to export million colors+ with compressor?
I have the same problem and can only export one by one with QuickTime Conversion. Would be great to let Compressor do the job while I’m sleeping

Crazy. Same problem going on for several years and no reliable fix. I do a lot of FCP-Alpha Channel exports; almost daily. It works exporting one off from FCP with Animation Millions+. Alpha is preserved in mov. We then (usually) transcode with Flash ME. No problem.

Recently we’ve been testing “Send To” Compressor…to create MOV with Animation Millions+ but the alpha doesn’t want to cooperate.

Any suggestions for the right mix of settings on Send To?
