  • How does a TV compensate the aspect ratio?

Posted by David Saber on October 29, 2006 at 7:17 pm

I have a basic question about aspect ratio.
Let’s say I create (on a pc) a video with an aspect ratio of 1.0667, for broadcast on a PAL TV. This means the pixels will be bigger horizontally than vertically.
When the video is displayed on a PAL TV, what happens? Do PAL TV have pixels that are bigger vertically than horizontally, so that it compensate back the stretching of the original video?
    Thanks for any explanation,
    D

You are right on…neither PAL not NTSC TVs display square pixels…only PC monitors do.
