  • How do you reset the “Always Ask” checkbox in Premiere CC?

Posted by Ant Gonzalez on August 20, 2014 at 9:41 pm

This question is kind of a two-parter.

When I create a sequence that is not the same sequence settings as the clip I’m using and drop a clip on the timeline I receive the dialog box…

Clip Mismatch Warning“This clip does not match the sequence’s settings. Change sequence to match the clips settings?” with two options that are “Change sequence settings” or “Keep existing settings” along with an “Always ask” checkbox.

Question 1: Since I almost always click “Change sequence settings” I unchecked “Always ask” and then clicked “Change sequence settings”. On that particular sequence the settings were changed to match my clip but the timelines I created after that didn’t automatically change. I was under the impression that by unchecking “Always ask”, whatever I checked from the two options would be the default from there on. Is this not the case and by unchecking “Always ask” it defaults to “Keep existing sequence settings” anytime I drag a clip onto a sequence from there on out?

Question 2: After realizing that the sequences were not matching the clips anymore I wanted to bring back the feature of the “Clip Mismatch Warning” dialog box but after unchecking “Always ask” I was unable to find a way to bring back ONLY that feature. I know I can hold Shift+Option (MAC) or Shift+Alt (Windows) to reset ALL of my preferences which brings back the “Change Sequence Settings” option and resets everything else but is there a way to reset ONLY that feature?

It’s not a huge problem but since sometimes I work with only a single format within a project file and sometimes I work with multiple formats it would be nice to be able to turn this feature on and off within Premiere without having to close out and restart and reset all my preferences.

Were you able to figure out how to get the clip mismatch warning box back? I’m having the same issue.

The only solution I found was to trash my preferences file and restart. My too helpful since I lost all my preferences but so far it’s the only workaround I’ve found.

In PPro Preferences -> General, there is a check box for “Show clip Mismatch Warning dialog”. Is this the setting you were looking for?

Thanks Andrew. That was super helpful. Was looking at preferences and thought I remembered it being there but kept missing it.

And thanks Ant for asking the question. Premiere does have some little intricacies that are frustrating sometimes!
