How Do You Make A Title?-Yes I Am Dumb
Ok I’m a long time Premiere user and mighty handy with it to boot.
But due to circumstances beyond my control I need to use FCP for this next project.
Here’s a dumb question, I have FCP 3, does it have a built in title maker like Premiere? Or do you make titles in Photoshop and import them?
In Premiere you simply select File>New>Title. Easy.
I can not find a similar process in FCP, I have checked the help and the manuals under “titles.” Nothing tells me how to make a title. What am I missing here?
My final goal is to have a title fly over video toward camera. Some thing I can make happen in 40 seconds in Premiere. I have a feeling it will be a long haul in FCP 🙁 Can any one make this a shorter process?

In the Viewer (the screen on the upper left) there is an “A” button on the far right. Click on that….a drop down menu will appear.
Now, you can use TEXT…but that sucks. FCPs built in title tool…icky. BUT…look for Boris Title 3D…or just TITLE 3D. Don’t have FCP 3 (been a while) so not sure how that menu is organized. But then select that and then your Viewer will go black. Click on the CONTROL tab at the top and then click on TITLE 3D (click here for options).
There you go. Hidden…tucked away. FCP doesn’t like Premiere users. (lol)

Ah I see there it is, thanks, then you drag the title onto the time line. You’re right, crappy title tool, Premiere’s is easier to use 🙂 I don’t seem to have this Boris dealio that I can find?????
Now I have to figure out how to key it and fly it?????????
I’m thinking I could build these titles in Premiere, make them into a QT movie, and import them into FCP……Steve Jobs has just arrived, he has two large men with him and a baseball bat, is that a bad sign???

You are using a very old version of FCP. Easily 4-5 years old. Things have much improved with the latest version (except for the Title tool). One of them is that it comes bundled with Livetype and Motion that allow you to go great things with your titles. Just like you can do great things with After Effects.
I seem to recall that Boris Title 3D was a separate installation on FCP. You had to go into the Custom Install and make sure it was checked. But forgive me, the last time I used FCP 3 was 3 years ago.

It may not be worthwhile if you’re going to go back to Premiere, but if you have FCP 4, this would be a good time to upgrade to FCP 5.1 – for $200 you can get the entire Studio package (FCP, Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro). Apple’s offer is only good until ~December 20.
