how do you get “BG Just Strobe it” strobe effect to work in FCP X???
Posted by Nick Natteau on July 30, 2011 at 8:18 pmThis may sound like a dumb question. But how do you get the “BG Just Strobe it” strobe effect to work in FCP X???
I’ve tried dragging and dropping that effect from the effects generator tab to the desired clip, but it doesn’t show up on the clip. I see no change whatsoever.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

July 30, 2011 at 9:01 pmHi Nicholas,
This effect is a “Generator” effect.
Drag the generator effect to the timeline. Select the generator clip in the timeline, then in the inspector you will see a dropzone that enables you to choose a clip. Adjust settings to taste.

August 1, 2011 at 3:26 amThanks very much. Not to complain, but it seems to me like the Strobe Effect that I used to apply with a simple click in FCP7 now requires what seems like 10 steps.
First I have to insert the effect in the timeline, then retime the effect to match the time of the clip, then select the clip to insert inside the effect. Then repeat this complex process all over again for every single strobe effect for each clip. In FCP 7, it was a simple one click command then “copy and paste effects attributes” option.
Struggling to adapt to the new paradigm. It just seems like every edit command in FCP X takes 10 times longer to execute than it did in FCP7, partly because of all the mousing over that has to be done instead of instant keyboard shortcuts.
Thanks for your help.

August 1, 2011 at 11:58 amHi Nicholas,
Unfortunately motions retiming behaviours cannot be published to FCP X as a “Effect”. If they could it would be simply a drag and drop to apply the effect.
This is why I have published it as a generator, using a bit of a cheat in motion I was able to publish the strobe effect across.
I admit this is hardly ideal at all. I have been playing with trying to get motion publish it as an EFFECT, I have been able to save the preset but it crashes FCP X everytime you apply the effect.
According to Apple’s motion manual it is not supposed to be able to publish retiming behaviours across to FCP X, well at least they are half wrong 😉

August 1, 2011 at 7:39 pmHi Brendon,
I had no idea the effect was yours. Congratulations and thanks very much for developing this effect and especially for taking the time to help me. I really appreciate it.
While I learn FCP X as best I can, I can’t wait for those badly needed FCP X updates that will hopefully eliminate those goofy glitches like the “in” and “out” points constantly disappearing as soon as you leave the event browser. That drives me nuts. Keeping my fingers crossed that the pro updates for FCP X come this year. Thanks again for your help.

Yes, we are certainly all looking forward to things getting added in which should of been there to begin with.
Cheers,
