  • How do you edit multi cameras on time line?

Posted by Mahesh Upadhyaya on May 10, 2005 at 12:29 pm

The subject-line does not define my question precisely so let me explain.
Say I have 2 events of a conference lined up on the time line.
One camera is on the speaker and one on the audience.

Whilst I am selecting cameras on the time line (with Excaliber of course), I see shots from other camera(s) which may make good cut-aways later on in the edit. It would be nice to mark and file away that segment as a possible cut-away.

So my question is, how do you log likely cut-aways as you are doing your main multi camera edit? Say you are sitting with a client. You do not want to interrupt the work flow too much. You notice a likely cut-away which might come in useful later on. How would you file away that bit of cutaway without inerrupting the workflow too much.
I would be most interested in how you would do it.

Simply split the clip you want to save and right click choosing “sub-clip” — the subclip will be placed in the bin you have open.

Another way is to right click on the clip you want and choose to “open in trimmer” — mark the area you like and hit the “sub-clip” button. This way will prompt you for a name, then place the subclip in your open bin.

Another thing you could do is place a “comment marker” at that location. Manually add a marker there (press M) and make the FIRST character a > followed by any description you like. All markers beginning with > will be ignored by the Multi-Cam Wizard. If you choose to “remove markers”, all markers EXCEPT the comment markers will be removed. Then you can easily see those specific sections.

Splitting the clip becomes messy if there are 4 or more camera tracks and associated audio tracks.
I like the idea of opening in the trimmer and making sub clips. I have not really explored the use use of sub clips yet.

I have, on occassions, used ‘comment’ markers to mark posible start point of usable clips. My trouble is, I run excalibur to assemble small portions at a time. So first time I run Excalibur, the comment markers are saved but ‘>’ removed. So next time I run the script, the markers are removed.

That’s true, the “>” symbol is automatically removed as the other markers are deleted. Maybe that should be optional???

    That would be perfect Edward!
I presume one would only need to remove the ‘>’ before rendering to MPEG2 for chapter points.

Ohh, that remids me, must order the upgrade to 4.0!!

[mahesh] “how do you log likely cut-aways as you are doing your main multi camera edit? “

I find it quickest to load the media into the trimmer where I can zip through it and just pop the cutaways into their own track that I can draw from as needed.

    Thanks Gary
That is what I would normally for cutaways ( although I do it on time line).
I was thinking more of 2 or more continuous streams of video, such as a conference, where I would play the time line, placing markers and then using Excalibur to assemble camera selections.
Now let say I have selected cam-1 but notice an interesting segment on cam-2. It would be nice to put a place holder there. I could
1-open cam-2 clip in trimmer and make sub clip – as Timothy suggested.
2-Place a comment marker as Edward suggested.

    Both suggestions are good.
Edward volunteering to make removal of ‘>’ symbol is even better:)

Only yesterday, Edward suggested the above and today he tells me ‘It’s Done’.

    Thanks Edward.
