  • How do you create loopable backgrounds in FCP?….

Posted by Alan Jones on December 20, 2006 at 1:47 am

I was wondering if there is a tutorial or resource on creating loopable seamless backgrounds in FCP or any of the other programs with it (motion, etc.) For example, a 30 second background that if repeated will just continue seamlessly. Thanks!

In order to be seamless, your first and last frame must be identical.

right. That’s true. I guess a follow up question would be how to do that when your content is more “abstract”? Also, is there a way to create some abstract moving backgrounds in motion?

You can use Motion to create some abstract backgrounds by using the Replicators Filter. If your first and last frames are not exact, you can always use a quick dissolve between. Not perfectly seamless but it can work. Live Type has many abstract backgrounds built in.

You could save time by getting some pre-built abstract backgrounds. I use some from Digital Juice and they work pretty well.

Right, I use digital juice as well as other backgrounds….just interested in creating some home grown stuff.

Well, like was said, just do a slow dissolve (or applicable transition). To be more precise, simply take a part of the begining of the video and put dissolve to it at the end.

If there’s no obvious direction in time, you can loop fowards/backwards/forwards etc seamlessly.

While it might not be possible to create the seamlessly looping backgrounds in FCP, you can do it quite easily in AfterEffects using fractal noise as the basis. There are several excellent tutorials on the Cow showing how to create the loops. I’ve recently created several myself. You could also use the textures in LiveType as looping backgrounds. You can change the colors, speed, etc. to your liking and then render out a QT movie which will loop seamlessly. Combining the textures in LiveType can give you even more variations.

    Dave,

Your comment is the very first thing I thought of when I read Steve’s first post. Spot on. The second first frame must go.
