September 8, 2009 at 6:30 amWell, you need to shoot 720p 30pN. That means that the camera shoots 30 actual frames per second, not 30 frames in a 60 frame stream. I don’t know of anyway to remove the frames from 30 over 60…because that isn’t what is known as “pulldown.”

September 8, 2009 at 3:46 pmthank you, then if you dont mind indulging me, what purpose does 30p serve? In what workflow is that format useful?

September 8, 2009 at 5:46 pm30p serves to have the progressive look, and not interlaced. More of a filmic look. Because 60p is ultra smooth. So 720p30 is 30 over 60…60fps but the look of 30 progressive. 30pN is 30 ACTUAL frames per second…not 60. This is a good option if you shoot 720 with the intent to deliver 1080i30 or SD at 30fps, but you want to shoot some great slow motion by shooting 60p and slowing it, frame by frame, to 30fps.

September 9, 2009 at 5:43 amMy output is typically internet, no fancy tricks or effects other than some chroma stuff. Is 30pN suitable for that? The transfer workflow is straight forward so I would much prefer to shoot in 30pN if there are no unforseen challenges. BTW, I’m new to DVCPro, I’ve been shooting HDV until recently at 60i and 30p. On the basic look I’m getting from the HVX, I’m really happy I made the switch but I didnt foresee some of these technical challenges.

September 9, 2009 at 6:20 amif I said capture, I meant transfer. I am using the log and transfer function but I’m getting duplicate frames under the 30p setting after transfer. I’ve heard from Shane that there is no pulldown for this in FCP, so what is the proper workflow for transferring 30p (vs 30pN)?
thx

OK, now we are getting somewhere. So you shot 30p over 60 and not 30pN. You can remove the duplicate frames on import by going to the log and transfer preferences (the little gear) and choose the option to remove duplicate frames. You can also put your footage on a 29.97 timeline and FCP will remove the proper frames.
Next time, just shoot 30pN, there’s no penalty.
There’s a DVCPro HD 30p easy setup. With P2, though, the footage will come in as it is, independent of easy setup.

September 9, 2009 at 8:04 pmThanks for the good advice Jeremy. But does it make sense that when I uncheck the “remove advanced pulldown and duplicate frames” box that the duplicate frames are removed? Thats what is happening. Either way, I have it now and thanks for clearing up the “no penalty” for shooting 30pN thing. I wasn’t sure if there were shortcomings to to that format vs 30p.
