How nice that nobody in all these posts actually told you the way it’s designed to be done. Simply match frame the clip into the viewer, change it’s speed, then edit it back in. At that point you get to remain in control, deciding on whether the in or out point stays in place via regular editing methods.

The point is that there are better, more dynamic and faster ways to do this. For example, some systems allow you to simply change the speed of the clip right on the TL while keeping the IN-POINT, OUT-POINT, or frame under the playhead (your choice) as the "locked" frame which won't move when the new speed is assigned (master IN's and OUT's are locked by default). This makes it much easier to lock a frame on the clip to a music of SFX cue, while allowing you to experiment with different speeds.

hm.. I have the same question… When I copy and paste attributes to the next clip that clip trims (speed), but when I’m doing speed change on each clip @change speed@ trim doesn’t occur so the problem is that I cant paste attributes on more clips at the same time and I could do that in previous version of fcp.. now Im using fcp 7.0.

Better way of doing it.. hmmmm “Rate Stretch Tool”. Fantastic, super-useful tool that unfortunately still only Adobe has.

Here’s the hotkey sequence for anyone else who comes along this thread:

Want it slow or fast motion? Press F to match back to the clip…it will appear in the Viewer with your IN and OUT points. Now, press APPLE-J to get access to the speed change window. Adjust the speed to what you want…then cut it back into your sequence. Nothing moves.

Of course, FCP 7 is out and one of the only things new in it is the checkmark in the speed change0 window that makes it not ripple the timeline. So I guess this is for all of us on PPC or who haven’t upgraded.
