i thought id be able to show a live example but since i can’t,i’ll just ask. How are effects where 3d objects seem to construct themselves out of nothing done. i thought maybe an effect or plug-in in after effects can be used or maybe its an effect that can only be achieved in a 3d application like maya

You often start with the thing assembled and then take it apart, then just run that in reverse. In 3-d CGI apps it is really easy to set up keyframed motion paths for every individual object. Start with it assembled, copy-paste the same setup keyfram to the end of the timeline, go back to the beginning of the timeline, grab each item and drag or otherwise position it to taste, render.
Parts then fly into place at whatever rate you’ve set.

For really complicated stuff, there are additional tricks. You wouldn’t want to keyframe every particle of glass in an exploding windshield, for example, maybe just one or two important ones, so a procedural animation or specialized plug-in applies physics laws to the group of items and makes up it’s own keyframing for you, for each piece, out of millions of calculations and algorithms. That’s stuff I have not played with yet, I am just beginning to dabble with particle systems.

You can’t email Mark, he is not a real person, but actually a quasi-fictional composite of several people, Like Mario Oratzio.

    (grin)

Sit tight, there are others on this forum that do this kind of shot for a living, they know how to do it much better than I.

    Olatunji,

The simple answer is this…the effect in that video is easiest achieved using a 3d application. Because of the nature and look of the blocks, they are in true 3d, not in AE’s 2.5D. As to which app, it’s a matter of choice from there. Maya, 3DS, or C4d could do it.

I’m more familiar with C4d, but would use a function similar to it’s Thinking Particles to build the road, combined with a camera Match-move out of Boujou or PFTrack, and then a composite in AE — By no means a simple task.

Hope that helps! Good luck with the job hunt!
