  • How do I select a 1/48 Shutter Speed????

Posted by Jennifer Mcdonner on August 6, 2008 at 2:08 pm

    Hello Everyone,

I’m shooting with a HPX-2000 @24n fps and I can’t for the life of me figure how to set the shutter speed for 1/48 (or 180)..My Options only start at 1/100 and go up to 1/2000 and then theres “HALF”… I have not a clue as to what to select to give it more of a film look. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Jenn

    Hi Jenn-

    I’m jealous you’re shooting with a 2000 :o)

However, I’m not sure you can do what you are trying to do with it: change the shutter angle. The only two cameras on the market today that will do this, is the HPX-3000, and the Sony EX-1 (believe it or not). For some reason the manual for the 2000 and the 3000 is almost the same, but in the 2000 manual, after the word HALF there are no shutter angle numbers like there is in the 3000 manual. Also in the specs. the 2000 doesn’t list the ability to do it ether.

Sorry about this; as someone who also shoots film I know what you’re trying to do but hopefully you will be able to acheive the look you want in another way.

    Regards,

    Dave

    Jenn,

If you want to shoot 1/48 with the 2000 in 1080/720/480 24 frame mode, use the ‘HALF’ shutter setting (that’s your 180 setting). You’re obviously going to lose sensitivity, but that’s how you do it.

If you keep the shutter off, the shutter will follow the frame-rate. You’ll gain sensitivity, but you’ll also gain more motion blur in 24/30p (1/24 or 1/30 shutter).

I use ‘HALF’ for 24/30p with my 2000’s, and turn it off for 60i/60p.

    Happy shootin’…
