  • how do I replicate an object many times in After Effects CC???

Posted by Nick Natteau on April 1, 2014 at 12:38 pm

I know I could simply copy and paste a bunch of layers from one layer, but is there a way to replicate an object in After Effects CC many times?

I’m trying to use After Effects to do an animated infographic where I show the arms race in the 1930s in Europe. I have vector images of tanks, planes, etc. I need to be able to replicate them many times in a grid. I’m thinking that there must be a quicker easier way than taking one vector image and copy paste it many times and adjust the position of each copy. Is there an expression or other way that I’m missing here???

    Thanks very much in advance.

There’s several ways of achieving that result.
You could use Motion Tile for one if you just need a grid.
If you have any of the Mettle plugins use Generator.
Any Particle System with custom particles can be used.
You could also try AEscripts – they have several scripts there that can help you achieve your desired result.
Trapcode Echospace can help you control layers in complex ways.

You could convert your vectors to shape layers too and use the Repeater. There’s a cool script for arranging layers in a grid, circle, or even spiral with expression control called Gridder, found here – https://aescripts.com/gridder/
