  • How do I render an MP4?

Posted by Jeremy Rowell on February 13, 2007 at 8:56 pm

I received an MP4 that is 320×240. the codec shows up as an “AAC, H.264, HINT”. The 30″ spot is only 1.3mb and the quality is pretty good. in AE7, can I render this type of file? I can do the H.264 codec, but I can’t figure how to make it an MP4… and the size comes out around 12mb.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

    Hi,

Render it out of after effects at best quality quicktime. Then open it in quicktime and export using the either mpeg4 or ipod and change the settings.

That’s perfect. Exactly what I needed to do. Thanks for the help!
Now does anyone know what versions of QT support MP4’s? If I start sending spots off for viewing, will some need to upgrade the QT viewer?

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

Yes, I have the codec and I was to export a spot in this form. But, when I email the spot to my GM and the owners of my station and they say “It does not play for me” and knowing that they do not know a Codec from a hole in the wall, I would like to preface it by saying: you need to upgrade you quicktime from your current version of x.x to the current version of x.x.

sorry if this is the wrong forum to post a QT question on… although my original question was AE!

Do I detect a little sarcasm?

I would think that the latest version of QT would support MP4, be it windows or mac. And if that is the case, I probably will NOT send out my spots in a format that REQUIRES someone to upgrade. I am trying to get a universal format that just about everyone can play that is small enough to email. I’m just trying to get the info I need before I start sending my spots out like this and my GM says “hey, I can’t play it”.

    Just doing my homework…

You could actaully render out that format directly outta A.E. choose quicktime then format options and pick the quicktim codec wether mp4 or h246 version.

I had tried that in AE. Using the H246 the file size came out at like 12.5mb. I could not get it around 1.5 to 2MB. Exporting it in QT, I was able to get that small file size.

    Hi Jeremy,

My system is OS 10.2.8 and Mpeg 4 plays on that. Thats pretty old these days so most people will see it.

H.264 is (I believe) some subset of mpeg 4 BUT you must have QT 7 to view it. In order to have QT 7 you need OS 10.3.9 or better. I believe that windows XP is OK with QT 7.

You probably know this but the AAC refers to the Audio. Perhaps this is the cause of the larger file size.

Hope that provides some insight is 100 % accurate.

    Hi,

Me again, If you are to send this out on CD, then maybe placing a quicktime installer on as well would work, which you can download.

But if you want something universal that is nearly guaranteed to play on a mac and pc then a muxed mpg1, would be the best.

Very cool, Thanks. I have the only Mac in my building, so I’m living in a pc world… From what I have found through researching is that most XP comps can play MP4. Looks like this will be the way I deliver my preview spots. Thanks to everyone. The Cow is the best!
