I’m editing a shot of a sword that has too much glare on it. How do I remove the glare? Is that something I can do in Final Cut Pro or do I use motion or color? (I’ve only used Final Cut Pro before but I will learn the rest of the studio programs).

    Also,
for a lot of questions I’ve been asking, people have been telling me to do things in Adobe After Effects. Do I need After Effects if I have Final Cut Studio? Does Motion do the same things, but After Effects is just better? I’m working for a company that only has Final Cut Studio, but if I need After Effects it might be possible to get it.

Usually you can’t really “remove” the glare, but maybe you can minimize it, in the visual equivane tof what we do when we use a parametric equalizer to isolate and push down one specific frequency band in some buzzy audio… I suggest you play with stacking layers of the identical video track and adjusting the levels in each one with the 3-way color corrector, and then playing with blend modes, to try and bring the details of the sword more forward in the image, more noticeable, and at the same time dampening down the relative brightness of the glare. I don’t think there’s a plug-in for this specifically, though there is one for repairng blown-out highlights, and it works if you don’t ask too much of it.

There’s no real substitute for getting it right at the time of shooting.

Or you could go in the opposite direction of what Mark suggested and try to enhance the glare by adding a lens flare or some glow. Make it look cool. After Effects is a very powerful tool that can do nearly anything in the right hands. Just prepare to spend the rest of your life learning it!
