How do I reconnect media?
Posted by David Prinzbach on March 26, 2008 at 12:32 pmIf a video file is off-line, or has been deleted from the media tool, is there any way to simply point out its location to reconnect it, or must I re-import the file?

March 26, 2008 at 1:40 pmIf you deleted the media, there’s nothing to point to.
If this is an imported file (a graphic or audio track, for example), you can select the master clip in your Bin and go to Bin–>Batch Import. Select Offline Only and a box will pop up showing where it expects the file to be. This filepath leads to where the file originally was on your drives when it was imported.
If it shows up, just hit Import and it will reimport it and relink to the masterclip.
If it has question marks, then the file is no longer where it originally was. For example, if the file was originally on your desktop and you moved it to a subfolder. Avid will look on the desktop, and since you moved the file Avid will show question marks. If that’s the case, you can choose to browse or look for the file, point to where it now resides, and choose Import. It will import and relink the media to your original masterclip.
If this is something that was digitized, you’ll need to select the offline master clip and choose Batch Capture. Hopefully you have the original tape, gave the tape a unique name so you’ll know which one, and you captured with timecode. If these criteria are met you can just pop the tape in and it will recapture the clip, relink the media to the offline masterclip and you’ll be good to go.

December 31, 2013 at 7:19 amHi Michael! I saw your reply to this post and thought you might be able to help me, I am in the process of relinking offline footage the way you said, it seems to be working, but it makes an additional clip (sequence?) in my bin. I am also wondering if, when I relink all my audio, if it will automatically resync with my clips. Finally, when I relink my clips, it doesn’t effect the same clip in the timeline, will I have to re cut everything an relay it on top on the offline media? A tragic hard drive accident left my school project devastated and I’m trying to reassemble the many hours of work as best I can. Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated.
Regards,
Rachel
