  • How do I prove a camera/codec is shooting 10-bit.

I’m looking for a way of creating a test to prove that a camera is producing a 10bit image or a codec actually is 10bit. Could I simply print a piece of paper with 1024 gradations of white to black or is it more than that? What would you suggest?

    MediaInfo will provide that information.

Simply because it is in the metadata means nothing. I want a visual way to prove it.

    Hi Ian,

I suggest shooting a test of a landscape including a large area of sky. Do this near sunset so you have both darker and lighter areas of sky. Shoot some footage in 10-bit, then shoot again in 8-bit. You should be able to see some minor posterization (stairstepping) in the subtle gradations of color in the 8-bit version, while the 10-bit version will preserve the fine color detail.

Decent idea. I was more thinking if someone had an idea of a chart that would work so it’s more definitive.
