  • How do I make Trapcode Form keep the 3d space when precomped?

Posted by David Cabestany on March 2, 2015 at 7:56 pm

I’m building small data snippets that are supposed to follow some tracked video, as each precomp is made of text, random elements and some stuff generated with Form I’m precomposing those and then my plan was to parent the precomps to the track data, except that when I precomp the Form layer all 3d space related to it seems to no longer relate to the outer scene, regardless of having collapsed transformations or not.

I think I have two options, either make the 3d space of the Form precomp work as I would expect when I collapsed the transformations or leave the Form layer at the same level and link the Center XY and Z to the track data via expressions.

If anyone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction whichever that may be I’ll be very grateful

You’d have to duplicate the camera and precompose.

    Check out this script:

I tried that script in the past for a different project, but didn’t work. I can’t remember exactly what was wrong with it, but I remember I had some issues and ended up discarding it.

I’ll try it again for this, if it works properly it will be a huge time saver.

Do you know why collapsing transformations does not work with Form?

    Thanks for your help,
    D.

[David Cabestany] “Do you know why collapsing transformations does not work with Form?”

Form is a camera-aware 2D effect. It does not produce real Ae 3D, but rather a 2D image that matches the view from the comp’s camera.

Collapse transformations does not expose the containing comp’s camera to the contained comp’s layers, so when they don’t match, you get a discrepancy.

Crap, that makes total sense. Precomp script it is, then.

    Thanks a lot Walter.
