  • How do I make DAY footage look like NIGHT footage in post in Vegas?

Posted by Chris Forsyth on March 16, 2009 at 5:07 am

    Hi All:

I tried to search this forum for this, but maybe I am not using the correct search terms.

I have raw daytime footage that was shot with some sort of filter on the camera that would make it easy to make the footage look like night footage in post. The film has gone bust – and I am left with the raw footage, that I want to use. I have no idea what type of filter they used on the camera, it looks like daytime footage to me.

Anyway – I need to try to match it to footage that was later shot actually at night. So the question is – using what Vegas Pro 8 has to offer – what is the best way to try and make this “daytime” footage “look” like it is at night?

Many thanks in advance for ANY and ALL suggestions.

    Best,

    Chris

The color corrector with possibly another FX or two (levels, curves) mixed in should do the job.
If you can post full-res screen shots from a daytime and nighttime scene, this would help us in making suggestions.

I would start by adding a dark blue gradient generated media to the track above the footage. The darkest blue should be on top to mute the sky while a more transparent dark blue should be used on the bottom. Adjust the overall opacity of the gradient event to color the footage as needed. This should give you a good starting point.

DigiEffects has a Day for Night FX but you would need Boris RED or After Effects as a host (although Boris RED can be used within Sony Vegas).

    Hi Mike:

Thanks for your response. I have posted 2 Day shots and 3 night shots – hopefully these will help. The night shots are pretty close up and from above, vs the day shots which were shot from the side. If these don’t help, I am happy to post more – just let me know what would be more helpful.

Basically in the scene – the day shots were in a pond, and I need to cut from there to the night shots, (which is to be the end of this scene where the guy is pulled under and drowned by “the devil and his minions”), these shots were done in a pool. I can tell they lit it from the same direction the sunlight was coming from in the day shots. The jpeg’s are here:

Any and all help / suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chris,

Try the Sony Color Curves FX on your video event or track. There is a preset called Night – then add blue if you want the shots to be moonlit. Magic Bullet’s Movie Looks HD (I’m not sure if it comes with Vegas Pro8, it did come with Vegas 6&7) also has great night for day presets, but they add a blue tint to the shots.

    Good luck.
