  • How Do I Make A Timecode Burn??

Posted by Bill Thomas on February 15, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Our previous format was betacam and it was easy to make timecode burns for our clients.

Now with P2 I’m not sure the best procedure for that. Unfortunately, about half of our work requires that the client get a timecode dub of the raw footage.

How can I accomplish this with P2?

    Thanks,

    Bill

Drop a timecode reader filter onto your footage- assuming you are using an NLE to ingest.

    Bill…

Did your clients just need to see the numbers or do they also need to have an LTC SMPTE signal on one of the audio tracks?

They just need to see numbers on the screen to choose shots.

I know FCP will output a timecode of a Sequence, but I need to have the specific clip timecodes.

ALso, when I tried that before, it took forever to render the time code!

    Thanks

    Bill,

Try changing your sequence RT settings. Most machines can play P2 back with the TC filter in real time. Quality might take a hit, but it should not matter for your purposes. We use a different approach.

Our process involves dumping all P2 to our AJ1400 HD deck from a long sequence (real time/no rendering/full quality), and simultaneously recording the deck’s TC window to the DVD recorder. This solves the P2 archiving problem, and once the HD tape is captured and the program is cut together, we just dump the P2 clips.
