  • How do I make a progressive DVD?

Posted by Frank Manno on June 4, 2010 at 11:28 am

I have a project that’s all fine and all set at 25fps progressive.
    All clips are 25fps progressive.

I want to make a DVD.

So I render it out as Mpeg 2 – DVD architect PAL Widescreen. I make sure field render is off.

But in DVD Architect properties it says ‘no’ for progressive.

It’s not highlighted so I can’t change it to ‘yes’.

    What am I doing wrong??

You are trying to make a non-compliant DVD and DVD Architect won’t let you. The DVD specification allows 60i, 50i, and 24p. That’s it! 25p is illegal for DVD delivery.

    Hi John,

Can you make a progressive DVD vs interlaced? I often use the “reduce interlaced flicker” option..but are the DVD’s that DVDA burns able to be progressive? I am assuming that if they are it will increase file size…correct? Also can you render to a progressive format in Vegas? Thanks!!

John, thanks for the reply –

I ended up creating the DVD anyway with teh ‘progressive = no’ setting and when I played it back on my plasma TV, it looked progressive.

I had shots with lots of motion and progressive was the look.

To summorize, I shot progressive with my 5D at 25fps, project settings in vegas all set accordingly, clips all set accordingly.

Final stage in DVD architect with ‘progressive = n’ and the result is just what I wanted.

Could anyone explain what could be going on here?

I have never been able to get the Progressive property to say anything but No. I guess the menus will always be interlaced. That doesn’t mean that your media can’t be progressive.

I don’t see why progressive would increase the file size at all.

Also can you render to a progressive format in Vegas?

Yes, you can render your project using the MPEG2 DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream or DVD Architect 24p NTSC video stream template and your video will be progressive.
