  • How do I freeze the shatter effect?

I’m trying to have a text layer shatter, freeze, then have the 3D camera rotate then reassemble.

But you can’t anymate a shatter, correct? How could I accomplish this while still being able to animate a camera with the 3D particles being frozen?

    I’m using After Effects 7.0.

This has been discussed before … I believe the solution was to animate the viscosity to slow down the explosion …?

Yep, setting the viscosity will adjust where you want the explosion to freeze. You’ll also want to keyframe the gravity so that the pieces won’t continue to fall after they stop exploding outwards. Then you can spin your camara freely.

To reassemble duplicate the layer and do a time reverse.

Wouldn’t it also be possible to pre-comp and use the Time Remap to stop it? Any drawbacks there?

I could see using some Force Motion Blur to get a sweet speed stop.

Well, then you’d be freezing both the shatter and the camera movement.

If I recall, the shatter layer and the camera need to be in the same comp. So you can’t precomp the shatter layer, then expect to move a camera around the precomped 3D shatter environment in the main comp. Would be nice, though.

That’s correct. the camera and the shatter effect need to be in the same comp.
camera animated in the main comp would result in a still precomp.
