  • How do I format subtitles from an SRT file in premiere pro?

Posted by Matt Locke on October 14, 2017 at 8:51 pm

I imported an SRT file that I downloaded from YouTube’s auto-captioning into my premiere project so I could permanently bake in the captions, but it’s giving me trouble. Primarily, the captions themselves are tiny, skinny, and have massive kerning making them horribly ugly, and I can’t seem to change any of that.

I noticed in youtube tutorials that your normal formatting options (font, bold etc…) are in their caption window, but they’re nowhere to be found in mine!

    Can anyone help me out?

    Thank you!

    How did you import?

Have you checked the SRT for styles?

There’s an app that is a bit dated but still works with the current build of Premiere, it allows you to load an XML of your final sequence, the SRT file of that sequence, and a Premiere Title Template (.prtl) and then it will export an XML of the SRT file formatted to the PRTL file. If you import that new XML it will give you your sequence with the SRT loaded into a layer above your video using the legacy version of Premiere’s title editor.

The app is called PremiereSRT and it costs $10. Which is totally worth it if you’re doing a lot of SRT importing into premiere for baked in subs.

If you are looking for something just to import SRT to legacy titles read my post 1 month ago:

You create the Legacy Titles without PPro. No need for XML. This app transports styles as well.
You can convert new titles to legacy ones.
