How do I figure out if a DVCPRO HD tape is 24p or 30p?
Posted by Dan Riley on January 12, 2008 at 12:29 amThe 1400 deck just says 720p on the front panel during playback.
I can capture it either way through the KONA3 and it looks pretty much the same.
So how do you tell how it was shot so I can capture it correctly
without having talked to the DP?Thanks,

January 12, 2008 at 12:35 amI don’t know the cadence of 30P but if you step through the tape frame by frame and you see a duplicate frame within a 5 frame set. The camera was in 24 mode.

I just put in a tape I knew was 24p and did what you said and see what you are
talking about. GOOD. Now the tape I wasn’t sure of although we thought
it was 30p, turns out to be 30p. No duplicate frames.
Also I did something else. I captured the tape two ways,
at 23.98 and at 59.94 (KONA3 DVCPRO HD Varicam).
The 30p capture, the audio was in sync.
The 24p capture, the audio got progressively off.But it sure would be nice if on the front of the Panny 1400
it told me which it was.Dan

Switch the front panel Display to User Bits. The frame rate is displayed there.

January 12, 2008 at 3:04 amIn addition to Walter’s excellent comment, you can also check this information in the Kona control panel. Click the timecode tab and choose rp188 for tc source then click the Userbits box. I am remembering this from memory as I am not in front of the machine, but that should get you close to where it is located in reality.
