  • How do I do a soft edged or picture frame effect over a moving background

Posted by Ron Moody on July 31, 2006 at 6:13 pm

I know it’s easy, but I haven’t been able to make it work without affecting the background elements as well.

All I want to do is use either a photoshop frame or paint my own in AFX to ease the hard edge or perhaps give a frame effect (like you see done via photoshop on a static photo), but applied to a video source over a moving background?

I know what I want to see but am not sure I’ve explained it clearly enough. If not, I’m sure you’ll let me know. Please be kind.

I know it’s not hard but for the life of me, I can’t figure it out!

Based on your description, I imagine two layers:

top: video source with soft edge
    bottom: background layer.

Select the top layer, then using the rectangular mask tool, draw a rectangular mask around the top layer. Hit MM with the same layer selected. Scrub the value of the mask feather property to soften the mask.

For more info, check the help regarding masking.

If I understand what you want to do…select the layer and double the mask button at the top (make sure it’s the rectangle). This puts a mask at the edge of your layer. Now if you want a picture frame, stroke the layer (using the mask) and adjust as you see fit.

    or

If you want a soft edge inset then make the mask’s Expansion setting something negative (i.e. -10) and Feather setting some value you like (i.e. 10). and scale the layer down to suit your need.

I hope I understood what you were looking for.

In case you are looking for an old fotograph look, try this one…

Make sure your picture is smaller than the Comp.
Desaturate it, make it black and white…
With layer selected make rectangular mask around the picture (by dubbelclicking the rectangular mask-tool)
Use this mask for your stroke around the picture (Effect>Render>Stoke)
Make the stroke fairly large around 15. Choose the rectangular mask for the path.
Then go to Effect>Stylize> Roughen Edges
    Edge Type : Roughen
    Border : 12

It’s nice when you like nice….

    Goos Luck
