How do I delete a gap in the timeline after deleting a clip?
Posted by Michael Schroff on September 29, 2008 at 4:32 amI split a clip into two pieces and then deleted one…but I can’t figure out how to easily close the resulting gap. Is there a command or a right-click “delete and close gap” menu choice that I’m missing?

September 29, 2008 at 7:20 am“Auto Ripple” – Ctrl+L. Its icon is up there on the Toolbar.
And there are 3 options/ways to set up its default method of operation. There is a Drop-Down arrow newxt to the Icon which clearly explains your options.
Word of WARNING! It WILL drag all from beyond the cursor. Now you may think this a good thing, but if you have a track, which you cannot see and it is overlapping the point of delete, that too will be brought forward. Nasty business!
So yes, Auto Ripple is good, and at the same time is a very VERY powerful tool. As a result, I’ve got very quick with the UNDO or CTRL+Z salute.

i’m all for spreading the word about vegas and how to get the most out of it. i really do believe it’s one of the finest nle’s i’ve ever used.
However, having taught it’s use since ver 5 in various schools and colleges through out the state, my first lesson is on how to use the on and off line manuals.
i’m all for helping newbies whenever and wherever possible – but i do expect them to be interested and intelligent enough to seek an answer for themselves before asking on a board.
if i have offended anyone, sorry. but i just don’t have the time or inclination to waste dealing with such sensitive souls.
goodbye,
leslie

September 30, 2008 at 4:48 pmDon’t worry Leslie, that’s why we have great mods and helpful users who do have the time and ability to help newer users.
In addition to auto-ripple, I have a little script that I bound to Ctrl+W that I’ve found very helpful. It’s called SelectEventsFromCursor.js and I think I got it from Edward’s site https://www.jetdv.com/
What it does is just select every event on each track from the current cursor position forward, then you can drag the whole piece and close the gap. I find it useful because I often end up using transitions of varying length between clips, so closing gaps would still just leave me with a cut and I’d have to grab everything anyway.

October 2, 2008 at 4:13 amI believe SelectEventsFromCursor.js is a John Rofrano script, from March 2004. If you ask nicely, I’m sure he’ll let you know where you can get it. And yes, he has updated it from 2004, and it works just fine in 8.0c

November 29, 2008 at 3:18 amHow do you “bound” (or bind) a script to a shortcut key ? I could not find that in the help menu.

November 29, 2008 at 3:25 amOk – I will answer my own post just in case someone else happens to wonder about this. After adding the script to the proper folder, you have to close and restart Vegas so that it becomes available in the keyboard shortcut assignment panel.
