How do I crop text in Motion 5?
Does anyone know how to crop text in Motion 5?
I can do this if I create a clone layer but since my text has 3D properties, I lose all 3D capabilities in the clone layer.
I’m just looking for a way to crop part of my text for stylistic reasons.
I’d be grateful for anyone’s advice on the matter.

You’d have to be more specific as to what you mean by “crop“. As in e.g. MASK? That you can’t do directly on the text layer, one of the many 3D restrictions, but on the group in which it’s in. But moving a clone within obviously won’t move the mask with it. And clones of 3D text layers are like 2D snapshots, so they don’t obey perspective, no, if that’s what you mean.

Thank you very much for your reply. I’m very grateful for your response – I was initially trying to crop the 3D text and then as a clone / layer / mask etc but as you confirm, you lose any 3D capability.
Now I need to bite the bullet and choose a 3D package to master. Perhaps Cinema 4D (I’ll stick to the demo version for now as I’ve seen the cost).

I would certainly recommend looking at mObject before you go with something like C4D, if you need it in FCP X/Motion.
