  • How do i correct chnging light levels?

Posted by Tim Bond on December 8, 2005 at 3:29 pm

    Hi,
I’ve been given some footage that was shot, hand held on a PD170, in a marquee. As the clouds have shifted outside i’m left with fading up and down light levels. Is there a way of evening out the level without me trying to match it frame by frame by eye?
    Thanks,
    Tim

Some of the adjustment effects in Premiere Pro have “auto” options that will attempt to do this. It can be processor intensive, though, so make sure to render the timeline.

Any suggestions of what to try first? Or if there’s a combination of effects that might sort this out?
    Thanks,

It’s hard say without seeing the footage first. Shadow/Highlight or Auto Levels would probably be my first stop. Levels can introduce color casts, though (color cast could also be a problem with changing light conditions anyway), so you might also need to toss on Auto Color. I usually have to experiment for a while before I find a combination of filters that works the way I want.

I just recently used auto color and auto contrast, individually and in combination, to correct changing light conditions in some footage and they worked really well. The auto contrast introduced a little bit of flickering in some cases, but not all, and after playing with the two a bit, I found a combination that worked.
