How do I calculate my duration when I change from non drop frame to drop frame
I’m about to start an edit for a show and the network specs say that the lock time must be 42 minutes flat and delivered in a 1080i 59.94 format for broadcast. I’m getting confused by the rhetoric of switching between DF, NDF and reading in different places that 1080p 29.97 equates to 1080i 59.94.
We’re shooting and editing at 23.98 and I’m currently doing tests to calculate what a lock time at 42 minutes flat in 1080i 59.94 would equate to in a 1080p 23.98 timecode. I want to make sure that we are locking at the correct time in the edit, and that we’re not over or under time when we convert (3:2 pulldown?) for delivery. Can anyone shed some light on how to calculate what the network specs translate to in a 23.98 TC? Or know any good TC calculators?

You don’t need ANY of that. This is very simple. Just change the timecode display in the source side to display 30DF code.
Click on the top timecode, choose SEQUENCE>Timecode>30DF

One small gotcha:
Remember that you start on frame ZERO
So, your last frame should show TC 00:41:59;29 (Instead of 00:42:00;00)Bouke

Here’s a handy free TC Calc that will do the job.
Set the Frame Rate to 29.97DF then type in the show length.
Since there is no 42;00;00 in DF T/C type in 42;00;02.
Now change it to Frames (75526), multiply by 24 and then divide by 30.
Now change the Frame rate to 23.98 and the show length at 23.976 is 41:57:12.\”MY MEDIA/PROJECT MOTO: If you think three copies of your media or project are enough.
