How do I buy a cheap legal copy of Avid Media Composer 5?
I’m looking to buy Avid Media Composer 5 and want to find out the cheapest legal way of doing it?
I need a commercial version, not academic.
I see ebay auctions that claim legal software licenses that have not been registered with Avid yet for $999 — anyone know how they can offer at that price?
I also see on ebay new retail versions for $1395…
I know I can buy an old version and upgrade, but that seems pretty expensive.
Any suggestions?

A new version will be almost $2500. Not much you can do – that’s how much it costs.
Academic is the only new “version” you can buy that has a deep discount.
Buying an old version is completely legit, and then buying the upgrade. For example, buying a MC 3.5.x dongle for $1200, then paying the $495 upgrade, is still only $1695 – less than a full new version.

What are the differences between academic and non-academic versions?

Nothing, safe the EULA limitation. Also, boxed Full retail versions include the Production Suite. Academic (and download regular retail) does not includer that Suite.
