I’m working on a short film where I take live action footage of actors on a greenscreen, use a variety of filters to make them look like cartoons, then combine that footage with simple 2D matte paintings (vectors, mostly).
The tests have been very promising, but I’m going to have to draw a lot of 2D backgrounds. This has made me consider creating 3D backgrounds and tracking the actor’s motion on a marked green screen. I’ve started looking at tutorials but I’m still a bit lost.
Am I correct that working with virtual environments takes a lot more time than working in 2D? Or, have there been technological advancements that make it fairly easy, compared to drawing a lot of backgrounds? I’m thinking it’s the former, but I just wanted to double check with people who know what they’re talking about!
