  • How color accurate is my monitor solution?

Posted by Marc Brak on May 31, 2008 at 9:31 am

    Dear Pros,

I am working on a project that was shot & edited in DVCProHD. Final output will be SD broadcast, so i’m monitoring on an SD CRT monitor (15″ JVC, component in), using a Blackmagic Decklink HD for realtime downconversion.

For delivery I’m planning to render out a DVCProHD master, take that to a post house, and have them make a DigiBeta copy.

So my question is: how color accurate is my monitor solution?

Alternatively I could downconvert to an SD mov first and THEN start grading, but the problem with that is that the project has some dissolves where one clip needs heavy grading and the other doesn’t, so i really need the handles.

Hope you can shed some light on this situation!

There should be no problems with your hardware & connections, the accuracy (or as close as NTSC can get to accurate) depends on the calibration of your monitor. Does the JVC have a blue only mode? does it have an underscan mode? If not, it will much harder to calibrate – but not impossible.

Refer to this page for your set up:

As long as you feed those color bars form the same source (i.e: FCP), you’ll have a fairly accurate reference for the chroma, especially if the monitor is made for production. Most all consumer monitors have enhancement circuitry that is supposed to make the image more “vivid”, but can make it impossible to get an accurate idea of what is going to master.

HD color space is different than SD color space. Your down convert is accurate for Rec 601 SD color space, but not for HD Rec 709 color space.

If you need to deliver both HD & SD, you should rent an HD monitor (or consider buying one for your future needs).

If you’re only delivering in SD, you’re probably OK.
