  • How can I use Trapcode Particular to make rubbish fall?

Posted by Daniel Haskett on November 1, 2007 at 2:13 pm

    Hi there,

Basically ive got 5 different objects, all of which are meant to be falling down the screen as bits of rubbish. The idea is there all land on top of each other and fill up the screen….

So basically im using Particular and have an object (toy) set to the Custom Particle. Ive changed the gravity so they fall and made the life seconds increase so more and more fall and faster. But ok heres the main problems –

    1. They all just fall off the screen, is there anyway of making it so they stop at the bottom of the screen and gradually pile up on each other?

    2. Im using the mesh tool to make the object move around and rotate, but when they toys fall they are all doing exactly the same mesh movements and rotations….is there like a way of offsetting them so that they are moving at different times….so it doesnt look so syncronized?

    3. Can you use motion blur with particular?

Phew! Hope someone can understand what i mean! I might even try and post a clip of where im at now…

    Thanks!

    Dan

Create a solid in AE, make it a 3D layer, then set it as a floor layer in particular (I think you have to change the physics mode from Air to Bounce). Then you can set how it reacts to the floor layer

    2. Im using the mesh tool to make the object move around and rotate, but when they toys fall they are all doing exactly the same mesh movements and rotations….is there like a way of offsetting them so that they are moving at different times….so it doesnt look so syncronized?

I don’t have it right in front of me, but someone else who does should. Also check trapcode and Andrew Kramer’s Tutorial on Medical Zoom at Videocopilot.net. He animates a “cell” rendered in 3DS and using particular to separate them out (I think its the second part of the tutorial)

    3. Can you use motion blur with particular?

Yes, you can. I think you can force it or set it to use the layer’s option. You can also have Depth of Field.

You need to change the Physics model from Air to Bounce and then create a 3D layer to function as the ‘floor.’ However, this won’t make the particles pile up on one another. To accomplish that look you may need to use multiple instances of the Particular effect each using a different ‘floor’ layer.

Set the start time of the custom particle to ‘Begin at Random Frame and Loop’ (or something like that, I think it’s under the emitter properties, maybe particle).

[DanielHaskett] “3. Can you use motion blur with particular?”

Yes, look under the Motion Blur section, I recommend using subframe samples.

thanks alot guys, your help has been much appreciated!

    awesome!

the floor plane feature definetly helps alot!
