  • How can I solve this problem? Premiere cs3

Posted by Ivonne Villanueva on May 5, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Hi, I really need your help with this. I’m working on a very large project of 6 documentaries in Premiere Pro CS3. As they are very big I divided the project and I work 3 documentaries in one external hard disk (let’s call it disk ONE) and the other 3 documentaries in another external hard disk (let’s call it disk TWO). The problem is that I work in one project in disk ONE, then I close the project and disconnect disk ONE, then I connect disk TWO (which is same brand and model: Western Digital Tera) then when I disconnect disk TWO to work again with the project in disk ONE, Premiere ask me for the location of the files, I give Premiere the location and pops an error message that says something like: This file is video only and it’s different from the original file that is Audio and Video.
So there’s nothing I can do and I have to click in “Work offline” and call every file one by one. This makes me lose a lot of hours (if not days) in something that it was already done before.
The thing is that the Preview files folder, Encoded files folder and Media Cache file folders are still in the hard disk drive, but I don’t know why Premiere can’t re-link. It’s suposed that Premiere has to do it when I call the project, because this makes that when I open the project I lose previews and every link with the files.
So, how do I re-link to scratchs disks and path?
All this happends just because I disconnect one disk and connect another one.

IT’S VERY URGENT FOR ME!! PLEASE HEEELP!!

    THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH.

    Hello Ivonne,

When you disconnect a drive, Premeire pro references the Media beingused and if it can’t be found it will give an error it has gone offline. When you re-connect the drives once you link highlight all the file in Premeire in the project media pane, you can select all the offline files, then choose link.

Once you have linked 1 file that the dialogue box asks you to link to it should then link back to all the files.

Hello Leo! And Thank you very much for your answer.
I already try that, to highlight all the offline video files and try to link. But like I wrote before, it keeps sending me the error message that says something like this: “This file is video only and it’s different from the original file that is video and audio”

So the only way I can do it is linking them again one by one. But imagine that I have hundreds and hundreds of files in one project, it takes forever. And also I lose all the previews so is even more time.

So my question is if in the hard disk drive there are still the folders with the Encoded files, Media cache files and preview files, is there another way to link them? So I don’t have to do it all again. (I mean the files are still there! why can’t Premiere link them automaticaly?)
I’m not sure, but I think that all this has to do with the error message that doesn’t let me link the files when Premiere ask me to.

But how to avoid this error message?

    Thank yoy very much Leo!!

    Hello Ivonne,

Make sure that when you plug the video drive in that it’s drive letter/path matches what is was in Premiere so say disc 1: H disc2: J

So when you reconnectmake sure they have the same drive letters as before when all the Media was linked then you should be okay.

I had a simialr issue to what you had when the drives were being un-plugged then plugged back in again the drive letters were different so the Media had to be re-linked.

Yes linking loads of video files is so annoying. Hopefuly making sure the drives letters are the same should do the trick,

    Leo

Thank you very much Leo!! Again 😉

I already did that too. I even wrote down in a paper the exact name and letter of each hard disk drive, and I’m sure that the project match the drive, but when I open the project and Premiere ask me for the file, I select the file but again the error window appears (the one I wrote before). I’ve done this several times.

The problem also is when I link the files one by one I lose the previews. So, what could it be?

    Thank you very much Leo!!

    Hello,

I think the preview files should also link as well, are you also making sure that the cache/scratch disks are setup to the same drive in the project preferences as well?

Hi Leo!! Yes, the cache/scratch disks are setup to the same drive in the project preferences as well. I am pretty sure that the error that apears on premiere is the reason of this, well 80% sure, you are the expert hehehe, but how to avoid it?? have you heard about this error message before??

    Thanks Leo.

I am not to sure, it should be able to retain where it’s preview files and cache are, as well as links to the files.

Is this a Matrox DV project, with separate audio and video files ( DV type 2???) I had that years ago, and every once in a while teh matrox codec could not find the corresponding audio. I believe that I would click on both ( Ctl click ) to make the link.

Not sure if this applies to Matrox HD and HDV

Another thing. How do you connect these drives? I do this frequently with a number of removable SATA drive trays. If this is Windows, make sure that both of the drives you use have the same drive letter when attached. Under windows, use control panel / administrative tools / computer management / disk management to give each drive the same drive letter when connected. If the drive letters are the same, then relinking should not be required. If you ever have both drives attached at the same time, or plug USB keys and other stuff in, then the drive letters will change.

Otherwise, or if you use a Mac, please ignore this.

Hi George, thank’s for your time! Actually is a hdv project but is not a matrox project. And well, the hard disk drives have diferent letters each, so I will change de letter and make sure is the same and try to see if it works… hopefully!! Thank you for your help!!

    Ivonne:

how are you making the drive switch?

I have a feeling if you power down the computer and switch the drives, then reboot, the drive should come up with the next available letter…

Each drive would have the same letter, but as long as only one or the other was hooked up at any one time…it should be OK.
