How can I set the render to optical flow?
Posted by David Powell on November 21, 2012 at 4:52 amI do videos where I use multiple slo-mo fx. In Avid I can set the motion render settings of a project before exporting. Is there a way to do this in X or do I have to individually set every example to optical flow?

November 25, 2012 at 2:28 pmHi there,
I’d like to help you out on this but the question is not clear to me. Are you suggesting that each individual speed ramp needs to be set to optical flow? If this is the case it is most likely because it generally takes a long time to analyze and render.
I’m not sure you can set an export present to do that in fcp x so old have I switch the speed ramps prior to final render.

November 25, 2012 at 4:21 pmThanks for your reply. I was wondering if when rendering a project there was one step to set all motion control to optical flow in one shot rather than going through the whole project and setting each individual clip.

November 27, 2012 at 11:25 amFirst of all, you NEED to set the clip to optical flow to properly preview it… Optical flow is fantastic but cause LOTS of artefacts if motion blur is occurring in the clip. So you dont want to just slow down the clip and then in the end set them all to optical flow. That could cause unwanted behavior
If you dont care about that, in your timeline, give the clips which you are slowing down a meta tag…call it, i.e., slowdown… Then when you are done, goto the timeline index and select all the clips with a slowdown TAG (Could even assign “Slowdown” to a role) Then goto the Retime menu and set them all to Optical Flow… or use/program the shortkey… Thats it 😉
