i shot two interviews on the ex3-xd cam today where the gain was mistakenly left on 9db. are there any filters i can use to reduce this and make it look more normal? thanks.

Compressor has a noise reduction filter, too. It can be used as part of pre-processing prior to encoding to MPEG2. Or you can use Compressor to reduce the picture noise and simply re-import the clip(s) back into your sequence. OR do it directly from the timeline using the Media Manager selection when you right or control click on a clip.

All of these techniques have tradeoffs. Noise suppression is often a blurring process that combines lots of adjacent pixels. Run some tests, very carefully. There are so many different ways to do this you may find yourself using a filter that is completely unrelated orr it may take stacking up two or more techniques. For instance, you might want to duplicate the track, apply some black clipping and some glow around the highlights and then blend this on top of the bottom layer. It’s a common technique to get a high dynamic range in poorly exposes shots. If you have any of the AE books by Trish and Chris Meyer, look up “instant sex” in the index.

Bit late. in FC try applying a bit of Gaussian Blur to the Blue or the Green channel.
