  • How can I make a Wiggle epression object follow a path as well?

Posted by Rich Vogel on August 20, 2011 at 3:26 pm

Hello, I have a comp that I have added a wiggle expression to, which looks fine. However, I want to have the object randomly wiggle, and also move across the screen from left to right, to follow a path, or just to set two keyframes for position to travel across the screen.

I can’t seem to do this on the position for the object that is wiggling, since it has the wiggle expression added to it, any keyframes I add cancel the wiggle.

Wondering how to go about doing this? Thanks in advance.

That shouldn’t be happening. The wiggle just gets added to the keyframed property value. There must be something else going on. Is it just a plain vanilla wiggle expression like wiggle(1,100)?

Oh hey! What a coincidence, I am using one of your expressions from this link: https://www.motionscript.com/design-guide/looping-wiggle.html

I guess I don’t need it to do looping really, I could just do something simpler. So I should just do a straight wiggle(x, x)? I remember liking how the expression on your looping page looked, which is why I used it.

Yeah, the looping wiggle expression is probably not what you want, because even though your keyframes will affect it to some extent, after the loopTime elapses, it will be back where it started. Start with wiggle(freq, amp) and see if that does what you want.

there are 3 way to do this.

    1. put and wiggle expression on the object and then parent that object to a null and animate the null.

    2. put the wiggle expression on the anchor point and the use the position properties to change the position of the object.

    3. pre-comp the object and put the wiggle inside the pre-comp and then on the root composition animate the position of the new pre-comp.

I forgot to write back before, that did it! Also thanks to the other reply here, appreciate the help. Take care.
