Activity Forums VEGAS Pro How can I import and edit iPad 4 MOV. files in Vegas 10?

“”Another issue I have with the ipad is that the videos I shoot look fine on the ipad but are upside down on other PC based devices. I know I shot them correctly. (A separate issue from Vegas.)”

I’ve had that happen to me too and have never been able to figure out why it does that. Interestingly enough it’s only Apple devices that I’ve had this problem with.”

It depends on the player. There is metadata in the mp4 file that tells the player the orientation. Some codecs respect it, some don’t.

Mark, surprisingly enough GSpot doesn’t make a recommendation.

    Mie,
thanks very much for that. I think I need an AVC1 Codec.

Either that or my footage is corrupt 🙁

Mark, if you have a short clip that doesn’t work for you, please post it to a site such as Dropbox so that I can try it on my system.
If you don’t have a Dropbox account, use the following link to sign up and we each get an extra 500 MB. of space free.

    Mike,
thanks for the offer; I will just get permission from the source.

I’ve probably figured it out though. I got a friend to send me a clip from an iPhone5 and it works just fine. I have the same version of QuickTime as you and G=Spot also does not propose a solution but Vegas and QT can play it just fine.
I think the other file is corrupt and/or truncated

    thanks

Mark, glad to hear that it works for you. The fact that it does tells me that your suspicions about a corrupt and/or truncated file are probably correct. In light of this news, don’t bother to post the file as you know that it’s the problem.

Hi Mike and all who are interested,

Thank you for the Dropbox link! I uploaded your QT version 7.6.8 from DropBox and installed it, restarted my PC but to no avail. Any video file from the ipad caused Vegas to stop responding.

Yesterday I had my appointment at the Apple store. The person I talked with had never heard of upside down videos or photos but told me that if you hold the ipad in landscape mode and tilt it ever so slightly beyond vertical (down) it will go upside down. To avoid this possibility, tap the home button twice, swipe across the bottom from left to right and click the icon on the left side which will lock the format. We’ll see if that works.
He also suggested a reset back to default settings and I did that.

At home, I installed Vegas 10 on my Dell laptop. This has QT version 7.74. It would not read the files from the ipad itself but if I put the video files on the desktop first, I could open them in Vegas! Progress!

So, perhaps my 5 1/2 year old XP PC is too old. I very much prefer editing on that to the laptop, but it seems as though it may be impossible. At least I can start to work with the files I have.

If I learn more I will post it here.

Thanks again for all the help, this is a wonderful forum!
    Diane

Diane, I’m glad to hear that you were able to get it working.
As far as old machines are concerned, my home computer is at least 5 years old as well, still running XP Pro and I can read iPad and iPhone videos just fine.
Blame it on the weather, computer gremlins or anything else that comes to mind 🙂
