  • How can I force particles behind a layer in 3D space?

Posted by Uli Kunkel on April 25, 2009 at 11:03 pm

I am trying to use Andrew Kramer’s “iPod streaks” technique using Trapcode Particular to put streaks around 2 subjects that were shot against a blue screen. I want the swirls to start in front of the subjects then swirl behind them and back around to the front.

Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

I have my emitter (a light) moving in 3D space, and it’s moving around my subjects with no problem. But making the particles do the same thing is another story. And my trials with the Z_buffer and Obscuration layers parameters have been unsuccessful. Perhaps there is another technique?

    Thanks.

Using the obscuration layer is the way to do it. If you need to have it go around both subjects that are on 2 separate layers, you can precompose both of the subjects into one layer and obscure the precomposition.

What could i possibly be doing wrong with the obscuration layer? When i set the layer with my subjects on it, the streak is getting obscured far beyond the edge of the subject. Does it have something to do with the alpha channel? The alpha of the subjects are perfectly keyed.

    Any thoughts?

You may need to use the Set Matte effect, or precompose the keyed subjects so that Particular does not “see” your key. If it’s not a perfect key, you might have some issues.
