  • How can I fix the length of a favourite video generator?

Posted by Paul Roper on June 8, 2011 at 10:33 pm

    Hello

I have a few favourite video generators in FCP; specific colours, text setups, etc., but they are always 10 seconds long. I’ve tried making a new ‘color solid’ for example, setting the length of it then doing ‘add to favorites’, but it immediately reverts to 10 seconds long. It’s mildly annoying having to reduce the length of these clips if I need to drag them to the timeline (the way the project I’m working on is set up, they’re always at the very start or end of a clip, so an insert or fit to fill edit wouldn’t work).

Is there any way I can force FCP to always make this clip a certain length (1 second would be perfect)?

    Thanks in advance,

    Paul

You can’t. Generators are a fixed duration.

    All the best,

I managed a kind of workaround, from some recommendations on Apple’s forum:

    1. create a new sequence

    2. put a generator (text, color solid etc.) on the timeline

    3. adjust duration, color, etc.

    4. drag the clip off the timeline into the browser, and use this instead of a generator.

The clip obviously won’t show up in any other projects, but it’s a handy workaround for now. Maybe in Final Cut X……
