I am trying to make a nice smooth line that I want to turn into dashes, like on a treasure map – how would I go about doing this?

I believe this is easier in Illustrator, but in Photoshop try this:

Design your line using the pen tool. Stroke the line with a brush. Turn the spacing waaay down on the brush so that you get a dotted line. For a dashed line – same idea, but see if you can get a rectangular brush to change angle based on path curve.

Maybe make your path however you want it, then just overlay a stripey pattern onto it, then fiddle with the overlays orientation. Then you can rasterize it and select the base color and delete it?

Photoshop doesn’t (yet?) make dashes. It does make strings of dots. To find out how to work around the dash problem, do a Googlesearch for: photoshop draw dashes
