  • How can I change from letterbox to widescreen?

Posted by Harrell Williams on May 25, 2012 at 6:27 am

Hello. I edit with Adobe Premiere CS5. I have video clips that have a black boarder all the way around, which looks like/is a letterbox effect. I want to match my other footage which is HDV 1080p widescreen, and I don’t want to loose any quality. Is there a way to change the letter box effect to widescreen (widescreen, meaning the footage is all the to the edges of the preview/playback windows)? Video formatted as VLC media file (.mpeg).
    These are the specs:
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 266.9 MB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Frame Rate: 23.976
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz – compressed – Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz – 32 bit floating point – Stereo
    Total Duration: 00:01:57:12
Average Data Rate: 2.3 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333

    Thanks.

It sounds like the video you’re talking about it simply smaller resolution than the rest of your footage / your sequence settings. Just click on the clip and open up the “motion” effect in the effects window. Increasing the size, I bet, will fix your problem.

If that doesn’t work, could you be more specific about the two different types of footage you have?

Thanks for the info. I followed your instruction and that didn’t work. The position = 720; scale = 100. These are same settings that are on regular/full size clip. The clip/footage has a black boarder around it and I want to stratch it so that the video is all they way to the edges. See the attached image. Thanks again for responding

This has happened to me to and what I found out was that the footage was shot in 4:3 and not 16:9. Letterbox is the same as widescreen just as AC-3 is the same as Dolby Digital, they are just called different names by different users. Your picture looks like it wasn’t shot in 16:9?
